In 1992, novelist Brian Francis placed a personals ad in the newspaper. He received a number of responses but there were 13 letters he never responded to. Now, 26 years later, Brian has written replies to those letters. Featuring a cast of 13 local Kingston queer actors, Box 4901 is a hilarious, strange, sweet and awkward look back at how gay men used to connect.
This was an exciting opportunity to test out the capacities for new casts to take on Box 4901. Working with non-professional actors in Kingston, we were able to understand more about the container of this production, and its ability to connect with audiences/artists outside of Toronto. In working with the foldA Festival, we were able to livestream this production and share the work across the globe. As a Kingston native myself, it was exciting to share such a queer story in my home community.
